Book #48: We Are Voulhire by Matthew Tysz

We Are Voulhire

Matthew Tysz

 Released: October 14th, 2008

My 5th book for 2024 was Matthew Tysz’s “We Are Voulhire”.

I picked up a side gig reviewing books over at OnlineBookClub.  This was the first one that I read for it.  I had to wait for my official review to publish before I could post this.

The story reminded me a bit of Lord of the Rings meets modern day fantasy adventures.  There were random quests, personal moments between several of the characters, life in a kingdom, and medieval themes.

I struggled to read some of it, but for the most part it was decent.

Here is what I learned:

—————

  • Lord Orlin committed indecent acts with children
  • Lord Meldorath takes his place
  • Woman comes to castle Hillport
  • Lord Meldorath is arrested
  • Emperor of Lullabies has 4 warring sons for claim to his land and throne
  • A huge feast is paraded into the kingdom.
  • Midius Maido is the Voulhire’s first knight and High Chancellor of the land.

  • It has been their greatest failure
  • Indara Nightla is the Vice Chancellor.  Twice Maido’s age.
  • Carlyle De Borta is a fishermen who has pod to sit at the table.  He is from Hillport
  • The kingdom is using taxpayer money to harbor one man.
  • This is something the public would join the insurgents for if they knew
  • Lord Meldorath carries a haunting presence about his name
  • The king insists he is dead
  • Lucius Nartik is the leader of the music and can create green flames from his hands.
  • Nobody in the kingdom could dance as fast as the pros
  • The king has leftover sent to his living space
  • The king is not a big on news after 25 years of good fortune.
  • The king has a bath and goes to sleep as the city dances til dawn.
  • Galen Bray set sail for Voulhire.
  • His ship ran out of food and he would have to eat fat that bobbed in the ocean
  • Galen lived in bad poverty
  • He is taken aback by what he find in Voulhire.
  • He enjoys it very much
  • Galen’s uncle dying wish was that he be found.
  • The Tipsy Trollup is Magnum Caelum’s first and only Inn
  • Rowan is Galen’s uncle executor
  • Rita is the innkeeper
  • It took Rowan six months to find Galen
  • Rowan was paid a lot of money for Galen’s safe arrival
  • Galen explores his new home
  • Galen’s house is called “Onita Steel”
  • Alabaster de Lasette, the defendant in court for indecent exposure, is a biomage
  • He causes the judge and several others to defecate themselves and another woman to orgasm.  He neutralizes several guards but refuses to kill them.
  • Eldus travels from Soulhire to Hillport with his family
  • He was a former judge.
  • Beverly was the only servant to survive the war.
  • Eldus offers Beverly double her salary to stay.
  • Dalehei Meldorath was King Wilhelm's favorite general, and one of his closest friends.
  • Meldorath secretly practiced unethical magic.
  • He chose to move to Hillport as a magistrate for unknown reasons.
  • Some schools teach practitioners to dance to their magic.
  • Orlin was a pedophile.
  • Meldorath was considered a hero for stopping Orlin.
  • He was found to be practicing magic on men, women, and children.
  • Beverly mentions that if not dead, Meldorath would be some place he cannot hurt people.
  • St. Lorcia, or Lorcia's Isle, was named after the wife of King Saint Idus.
  • It is a beautiful island.
  • Captain Barcaedi has his men row for a few hours a day to maintain strength.
  • The captain feels that spreading legends and stories glorifies someone not worthy of such things.
  • Eldus speaks to townspeople over their concerns.
  • They want better education for their children.
  • They want more doctors due to the dangers of their work.
  • Eldus awakens Beverly at 2 in the morning to look for hidden documents on his predecessors.
  • Eldus is given the diary of Lord Orlin.

—————

Overall, the book was decent, but not the best read in the world.  If you love fantasy, you'd really get a thrill.  Otherwise, pass on this one.

On to Book #36: "The Audacity of Hope" by Barack Obama.
